Abstract in another language
We showcase that harmonious and obsessive passion are psychological resources that help entrepreneurs to regulate their positive and negative affect in a recursive process that eventually enhances entrepreneurial success. Based on a repeated measurement study over eight weeks with 1,691 observations of 227 entrepreneurs, we find that both obsessive passion and harmonious passion can lead to entrepreneurial success via affective pathways. Specifically, both harmonious and obsessive passion influence entrepreneurial success through positive affect, while harmonious passion also supports entrepreneurs to dampen negative affect. Furthermore, both positive and negative affect can build obsessive passion, while negative affect consumes harmonious passion. Our findings show that our conceptualization of obsessive and harmonious passion as psychological resources can explain the important role of passion in regulating affect and ultimately entrepreneurial success. We also highlight that obsessive passion does not only have a ‘dark side’ but also a ‘bright side’ for entrepreneurial success through the capacity to upregulate positive affect.
