With the ever-growing need to increase environmental sustainability, industrial companies find themselves
at the forefront of a global transformation towards decarbonization. Therefore, it is imperative
for manufacturers to adopt a systematic decarbonization approach that incorporates, e.g., energy efficiency,
the use of renewable energy and measures decarbonization efforts transparently for stakeholders.
Leveraging Information Systems to drive a holistic industrial decarbonization presents both a key
challenge and a gateway to new opportunities, which is increasingly referred to as ‘twin transformation’.
To guide decisions in the twin transformation, manufacturers need to assess their capabilities
in using Information Systems for the purpose of decarbonization but currently lack a standardized measurement
framework. Against this background, we follow the design science research paradigm and develop
a maturity model that allows manufacturers to effectively leverage Information System capabilities
to actively increase sustainability efforts in terms of reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions.
