Am 23. Februar 2025 wird in Deutschland der 21. Bundestag gewählt - und es wird spannend. Denn bei dieser Wahl kommt die Reform des Wahlrechts von 2023 zum ersten Mal zum Einsatz, mit dem Ziel die Anzahl der Abgeordneten im Parlament zu verringern. Zahlreiche Parteien treten an, um sich die begehrten Plätze im Bundestag zu sichern. Gleichzeitig tauchen neue Begriffe auf, wie zum Beispiel "Brombeerkoalition", die für eine bunte Mischung aus verschiedenen Parteien steht. Doch was bedeutet das alles konkret für uns als Wählerinnen und Wähler?

Wenige Wochen vor der Wahl wollen wir uns mit einigen wichtigen Fragen beschäftigen: Wie lässt sich Macht eigentlich mathematisch messen? Welche Auswirkungen hat die jüngste Wahlrechtsreform? Hätte es vielleicht bessere Alternativen gegeben? Und was steckt hinter dem Vorwurf, dass die Wahlkreise im Januar 2024 zu Gunsten bestimmter Parteien "manipuliert" wurden?

Diese Fragen berühren nicht nur die politische Zukunft, sondern auch unser Verständnis von Demokratie und Fairness. Es verspricht also ein spannender Blick hinter die Kulissen der deutschen Politik - und auf die Mathematik, die dabei eine große Rolle spielt.

On February 23, 2025, the 21st Bundestag will be elected in Germany - and it will be exciting. Because in this election, the electoral law reform of 2023 will be used for the first time, with the aim to reduce the number of representatives in parliament. Numerous parties are running to secure the coveted seats in the Bundestag. At the same time, new terms are emerging, such as “blackberry coalition,” which stands for a colorful mix of different parties. But what does all of this actually mean for us as voters?

A few weeks before the election, we want to address some important questions: How can power actually be measured mathematically? What effects does the recent electoral law reform have? Could there have been better alternatives? And what is behind the accusation that the constituencies in January 2024 were “rigged” in favor of certain parties?

These questions not only affect the political future, but also our understanding of democracy and fairness. It promises an exciting look behind the scenes of German politics - and at the mathematics that plays a major role in it.
