Abstract

This article reconstructs the positionality of an individual bearing the Armenian name
Arewšah, as well as the Turkic name Khwushqadam, who supported the refoundation
of an Armenian Christian monastery at Erkan in ca. 1430 ce. He is stated to have supported
this refoundation in his capacity as local governor (nāʾib) serving the Muslim
Aqquyunlu ruler qara ʿUthmān. Based on a detailed survey of the notes of possession
contained in the unique manuscript that praises the patronage of Arewšah /
Khwushqadam at Erkan, I suggest that he originally hailed from the area around the
town of Hizan / Bitlis south of Lake Van, before assuming a governorship in Aqquyunlu
Dersim. Although the name Arewšah is not attested in Aqquyunlu court historiography,
I conclude with the suggestion that he could be identical to the Khwushqadam
bīk b. ʿAbdalʿazīz who is mentioned among Aqquyunlu leaders between ca. 1435 and
1455 ce.
