Abstract in another language

The chapter presents a comprehensive overview of the interplay between science and religion in Germany, offering insights into a unique societal landscape characterized by religious diversity and significant secularization, particularly in the eastern regions. Drawing on qualitative interview data from a diverse group of 64 participants, including life scientists and members of the general public, the analysis uncovers a nuanced understanding of the relationship between science, religion, and personal worldviews. While some religious individuals perceive harmony between science and religion, emphasizing the moral guidance provided by faith, others prioritize scientific inquiry, viewing empirical evidence as paramount. Conversely, a minority of religious life scientists advocate for the compatibility of faith and scientific pursuit. The chapter highlights a broad consensus among respondents regarding general rules of discourse, the value of science, and the non-political nature of religion, juxtaposed with instances of perceived conflict stemming from religious expression that challenges the prevailing secular normativity. By exploring the German context, this chapter enriches our understanding of the dynamics of science and religion in diverse global settings, contributing valuable insights beyond the scope of research predominantly focused on English-speaking countries.
