Abstract
The paper addresses the issue of how many pupils in the transition from primary to secondary level
have such severe difficulties in learning arithmetic that specific support in secondary school appears
to be indispensable. A study is presented in which the scores of fifth-graders in an arithmetic test
have been interpreted by experienced teachers. The findings show that the need for support is
considerable, but also strongly dependent on the type of secondary school. The results highlight the
challenge for the school system to establish structures to identify these pupils, diagnose their
difficulties in a differentiated manner, and support the pupils appropriately.
