Abstract in another language
Digital competencies are vital for professionals to excel in tomorrow’s digital work environment. New digital business degree programs emerge alongside more traditional information systems (IS) degree programs to address the increasing need for digital competencies. Our work examines these programs and takes on an IS education perspective to derive guidance on which competencies should be taught. Based on existing curriculum guidelines and competency models for IS programs and with the help of a multi-vocal and interdisciplinary literature review, we design the digital business competency model (DBCM). It comprises the five competency realms: communication and collaboration, data, manage-ment, software and system development, and technology. It includes 21 associated competency areas, such as data analytics in the data competency realm. The DBCM was validated in two iterations by 47 experts from academia and industry. The validation revealed the predominant relevance of digital com-petencies in the realms of management and communication and collaboration.
