Abstract

Vapor-compression cycles are the state-of-the-art for refrigeration and heat pumps. However, vapor-compression cycles suffer from disadvantages, such as downscaling limits and the need for maintenance. These disadvantages might be overcome by alternative technologies like electrochemical processes. One promising alternative is a hybrid cooling process combining a typical vapor-compression cycle with an electrochemical cell. Similarly to the classical vapor-compression cycle, cooling is realized through the evaporation of a circulating fluid. However, the circulating fluid recondenses in an electrochemical cell by altering the fluid composition in a reversible electrochemical reaction. This design shifts the compression step from the vapor to the liquid phase, substantially decreasing the compression work. In this work, we evaluate the efficiency potential of this hybrid electrochemical cooling process. We developed an equilibrium-based process model and screened for possible molecule pairs with proton-exchange redox reaction. To ensure maximum efficiency for each molecule pair, the process settings (concentrations, temperatures) are numerically optimized concerning the coefficient of performance (COP). We evaluated 5633 molecule pairs (redox reactions) from the COSMO-RS database. While most redox reactions investigated show smaller or similar efficiencies than vapor-compression systems (COP≈4.1), we identified 11 redox reactions that achieve higher efficiencies (COP up to 8.5) and are worth further investigation. We found the electrochemical conversion being a crucial process parameter to be optimized: Lower conversion generally decreases the cell work but can also decrease the heat uptake. Since both have an opposite effect on the COP, a molecule-pair-dependent optimal conversion exists. Our model allows identifying promising working pairs efficiently.
