When we aim at effectively promoting conservation, we have to identify intellectual and motivational abilities that are preconditions for ecological behavior. These preconditions not only have to be behavior-effective, they should also be appropriate for being addressed in the scope of behavior-change. Environmental knowledge is commonly recognized as an intellectual such precondition. The analysis of motivational sources behind conservation traditionally addressed environmental attitude and people´s morality. Another very promising motivational force, as corroborated by a growing body of research, is a person´s connectedness to nature. In a study with N = 1922 students, we collected data for environmental knowledge, the disposition to connect with nature, and conservation behavior. By modeling these environmental competences´ structure, we aim at a better understanding of the interrelations between environmental knowledge and connectedness, furthermore, we investigate how these environmental competences conjointly affect a person´s conservation performance.
