Extreme weather and climate events can have serious and damaging effects on human society as well as on ecosystems and wildlife. One of the most important aspects of a change in climate is the increase in frequency and intensity of extreme events. Knowledge on the potential responses of organisms and ecosystems is crucial for the conservation and management of biological diversity. Here, we give a short overview of different perspectives dealing with extreme events and their impacts and we discuss the question of what is extreme. The literature study reveals an increasing interest in impacts of various extreme events during the last two decades. Ecology is the subject area which deals most frequently with extreme events, whereas other fields of study – limnology, ornithology and entomology – show major research gaps. Single case studies illustrate that extreme event impacts vary depending on what spatial and temporal scale, ecosystem, species and unit of organisation they focus on.
