Abstract
Generally, we believe that social sciences can lead the way forward in using research to reduce structural injustices, inequalities, and exclusions. However, how do we resist coloniality and its matrices of power that continue to influence how we produce knowledge as social scientists? For
one, solidarity denotes a relational concept and practice, a unity, or overlap of interests and support. In the same breath, it also encompasses dependency and expectations of reciprocity. For another, people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized are granted equal access to opportunities and resources under the promise of inclusion. How is diversity to figure in this nexus? We take the themes of solidarity, diversity and inclusion as departure points to reflect on access to electricity and the presence of women in the taxi industry in South Africa. Throughout our paper, we also grapple with some of taken-for-granted assumptions, values and commitments underpinning the liberal-oriented themes.
