Abstract
In order to achieve the zero-emission target for greenhouse gases in the coming decades, it will be
necessary to further improve the energy efficiency and durability of products. To achieve this, there is
great potential in reducing friction and wear in technical systems by improving the tribological contacts
within the systems. For instance, an amorphous carbon coating can improve friction and wear behavior.
Particularly in lubricated contacts with a high sliding component, microtexturing of the surface can also
reduce friction in the contact. However, two challenges arise here. Firstly, textures only lead to an
improvement in tribological behavior if they are adapted to the application’s demands. In order to
achieve this without great experimental effort, numerical approaches have been increasingly used in
recent years. On the other hand, the manufacturing effort of the textures has to be reduced in order to
allow an economical production. Up to now, texturing of components often requires an additional process
step, such as using laser ablation. Processes of metal forming combined with a micro coining step allow
the fabrication of ready-to-use components with micro textures on the surface.
The authors, therefore, present a concept for the application-oriented development and forming
production of microtextured components using the example of a textured tappet, as used in cam/tappet
contacts. In the first step, an elastohydrodynamic (EHL) simulation is carried out to determine an optimum
texture geometry and arrangement based on the contact conditions in the real application. The extent to
which a locally different texture geometry can contribute to an improvement in the friction conditions will
also be investigated. The textured tappets are produced by a combined single-stage process, consisting of
deep drawing, ironing, and micro coining. Subsequently, the achievable manufacturing deviations are
analyzed and the potential for friction reduction is evaluated in bench tests and compared with the
simulation results.
