Abstract
Several studies have shown that intercropping can contribute to increased phosphorus (P) uptake by plants, resulting in higher yields. However, the underlying mechanisms of increased plant P acquisition are not yet fully understood. The aim of this study was to test potential mechanisms of P acquisition in an intercropping experiment. We investigated pH changes and phosphatase activities in the rhizosphere of maize (Zea mays) intercropped with either faba bean (Vicia faba), blue lupin (Lupinus angustifolius) or white mustard (Sinapis alba) in comparison to maize monoculture. For this purpose, plants were grown in rhizoboxes, phosphatase activity was investigated by soil zymography, and pH changes were assessed using pH-indicator gels. In addition, a field experiment was conducted with the same plant species to investigate effects of companion crops on maize biomass production. First results suggest that different companion plants use different P acquisition mechanisms (rhizobox experiment) causing different maize yields (field experiment).
