Die Quellfluren der silikatischen Mittelgebirge im Osten Deutschlands (inkl. Nordostbayern) sind im Gegensatz zu denen im maritimen Westen auch unter Wald ohne Baumwuchs. Oft sind sie durch eine zirkusartige, verebnete Eintiefung gekennzeichnet. Diese Eigenschaften werden als Folge der Kammeisbildung gedeutet, welche bei relativ konstanter Nachlieferung von gespanntem Wasser aus Aquiferen in Deckschichten bei anhaltend tiefen Wintertemperaturen der Bodenoberfläche erfolgt. Das Kammeis verhindert die Etablierung von Baumindividuen und ermöglicht die laterale, flächenhafte Ausweitung der Quelle. Wegen der ausgeprägten Klimaabhängigkeit des Kammeises sind diese Phänomene auf Gebiete mit kontinentalem Klima beschränkt.

Springs in the silicate mountains of the eastern part of Germany (including northeastern Bavaria) often form rounded basins with flat bottoms that are incised into the relief; these basins are free of trees even in forested areas. Both features are uncommon to the maritime west. They are interpreted by means of needle ice that forms if water is constantly delivered by confined aquifers, usually provided by cover-beds, and if winter soil-surface temperatures are continuously low. The needle ice prevents tree growth and enables the lateral back-wearing of the spring walls. Because needle ice heavily relies on climate conditions, these phenomena are restricted to a more continental climate.
