Abstract
A new bacterium (“DSM11628”) capable of heterotrophic sulfur oxidation under slightly alkaline conditions (pH 8.4) was isolated from an oxic water layer above a sulfide containing sediment. A comparison of 16S rDNA sequences reveals its association with the genus Burkholderia (formerly Pseudomonas rRNA group II). The isolate is a strict aerobe and oxidizes reduced sulfur compounds, utilizes a number of mono- and disaccharides as well as Krebs cycle intermediates as carbon and energy sources, but fixes neither CO2 nor N2. Based on phenotypic and phylogenetic considerations, a new species, Burkholderia norimbergensis is proposed.
