Abstract in another language
During a foray to the mountain rainforests of theDemocratic Republic of the Congo, a peculiar species ofXylariaceae was found, which could not be accommodatedin any of the existing genera. It is recognised asrepresentative of a new genus, named Ruwenzoria, owingto the presence of a new combination of teleomorphic andanamorphic characters that are regarded as significant forgeneric segregation within the Xylariaceae. Studies on itssecondary metabolites in stromata and cultures by highperformance liquid chromatography, coupled with diodearray and mass spectrometric detection (HPLC-DAD/MS),and on its phylogenetic affinities based on 5.8S/ITS rDNAsequence data, respectively, revealed a close relationship ofthe new taxon to the genera Daldinia and Entonaema, from which it differs by having neither a hollow, gelatinousnor a conspicuously zonate stromatal interior, and ananamorph featuring enteroblastic rather than holoblasticconidiogenesis. A specimen from the same geographicregion, previously identified as Daldinia bakeri by R.W.G.Dennis was found to constitute a mixture of stromata ofRuwenzoria and an additional, undescribed Daldiniaspecies. The latter fungus is not formally described due tothe scantiness of the material, but its morphologicalcharacteristics are illustrated.
