Abstract in another language
In recent years, a number of biodiversity data networks wereestablished in the framework of international initiatives. Beside these generalapproaches, more specialised networks integrating high-quality research dataof specific taxonomic or organism groups exist. Exemplified with lichendata, some general types of mechanisms for bidirectional and consistent dataflow in distributed systems starting from information gathering until datapresentation and exchange (including options for online data analyses) aredelineated. In this context, challenges include the increasing demand (a) fordeveloping appropriate management tools on a concept-driven basis, (b) forspecialised network infrastructures with databases, data standards, clientsoftware based on advanced technologies, and web services, and (c) for datarepositories for sustainable storage of a wide range of biodiversity datadomains and types. The products of the IT Center of the Bavarian NaturalHistory Collections (SNSB) with a focus on the Diversity Workbenchframework (http://www.diversityworkbench.net) and the data flows realisedthere exemplify the challenges when building up biodiversity informaticsinfrastructure.
