Die experimentelle Untersuchung der Enzymaktivität von L-Laktat-Dehydrogenase beruht auf einem optischen Test: Die reduzierte Form des Coenzyms β-Nicotinamid-adenin-dinucleotid (NADH) absorbiert spezifisch im nahen ultravioletten Licht (UV-A; Absorptionsmaximum bei 340 nm), in der Regel nachgewiesen durch den Einsatz eines Photometers (oder indirekt durch einen Redoxindikator, z.B. Methylenblau). Wir schlagen für den Schuleinsatz einen einfachen Aktivitätsnachweis vor, der auf der spezifischen Fluoreszenz von NADH beruht, sichtbar unter einer üblichen UV-Lampe.
