Abstract in another language

The present study demonstrates a scale developed to measure two dimensions of environmental perception: Two subconcepts are distinguished, reactions towards preservation and towards utilising nature and/or environment, consisting of two and three subscales, respectively. The empirical part consists of a re-analysis of data from four national samples, now analysed together as one sample. The results of the four subsamples (of some 4500 secondary school pupils in total), have been published elsewhere as bilateral studies each. The aim of the present analysis is to identify a scale that is valid for the entire European sample: finally by means of factor analyses and structural equation modelling 20 items were extracted. Two latent variables, ‘Utilisation’ and ‘Preservation’, were hypothesised and related in a causal fashion, whereby ‘Utilisation’ influences ‘Preservation’ as well vice versa. By application of the methods of linear structural relationships (LISREL), the proposed model yields adequate fit to the data.
