Abstract

This paper summarizes results of a Study on grain boundary phase distribution and surface layer composition in porous silicon nitride ceramics with Yb-silicate utilized as liquid phase forming additive, upon sintering at ambient pressure in a silicon nitride powder bed. The lowest amount of Yb(2)SiO(5)-additive sufficient to achieve complete transformation of alpha-Si(3)N(4) to beta-Si(3)N(4) is 3.2 mol%. corresponding to 10wt%. The pure silicate is superior as additive when compared with oxide-silicate mixtures. The soaking temperature is identified as the major factor influencing the shrinkage and weight loss, while the extension of a compositional gradient of the additive within the sintered part and the composition of the surface near layers is significantly affected by the composition of the sintering atmosphere during heat up. When argon gas is used during heating up and replaced by nitrogen upon soaking the surface of the sintered ceramic is free of Yb(2)SiO(5), whereas in N(2)-atmosphere a silicate-rich coating is found as surface layer of the porous silicon nitride ceramic.
