Abstract in another language
The effects of a guided visit to a national park (the Intervention) are examined in terms of the two-factor Model of Environmental Values (2MEV) and of Festinger’s theory of Cognitive Dissonance. The Intervention both reduced scores on the Utilization (anthropocentrism) factor and increased scores on the Preservation (ecocentricism) factor. Intervention is hypothesized to trigger dissonance in those participants either endorsing both Utilization and Preservation or rejecting both; and, consistently with Dissonance Theory, it is precisely these groups that demonstrate the greatest degree of change. The existence of these groups provides clear evidence for the necessity of a bi- as opposed to a unidimensional model of environmental values. The results provide further evidence for the orthogonality of these two factors.
