Spinnenseiden sind Proteinfasern mit außergewöhnlichen physikalischen Eigenschaften: Sie weisen sowohl eine hohe Zugfestigkeit als auch eine hohe Verformbarkeit auf und sind stärker belastbar als Seide oder jede Kunstfaser. Zudem besitzen Spinnenseiden eine hohe Biokompatibilität. Ihre Proteine sind amphiphil, und wenn sie einmal assembliert sind, zeigen sie nur wenig Quellung in Lösungsmitteln. Mit diesen Eigenschaften sind sie auch als pharmazeutischer Hilfsstoff interessant.
