Abstract
Vast gully systems are a striking morphological feature in the forests of the northern Odenwald, an upland region extending east of the river Rhine in the southern part of the German federal state of Hesse. In the present study, a small catchment area massively affected by gully erosion was surveyed in detail with respect to its geomorphological and pedological situation, and a sediment budget was generated. In this way, it is possible to put the extent of linear erosion by gullying in relation to the non-linear processes of sheet erosion. In addition, on the basis of these findings, conclusions about the historical evolution of the region, ecological consequences and aspects of future relief processes can be drawn.
