Abstract

Today, when designing engineering components, structural optimization is of growing importance. Particularly the topology optimization allows new designs that were unthinkable before. Thanks to additive manufacturing, light-weight designs that were not possible yet, can now be produced. In the current form of usage, the typical process of structural optimization requires expert knowledge in different areas. Usually the process starts with topology optimization followed by a smoothing step and the redesign of the resulting design proposal in CAD software. A subsequent shape optimization reduces critical areas in the part and another redesign in CAD software leads to the final geometry. The EU funded project (European Regional Development Fund ERDF) OptiOnEn aims to reduce the necessary expert knowledge and the possible errors induced by the interfaces between different process steps. The goal is to automate the whole process of structural optimization so that only the input data has to be provided once and no intermediate steps are required. This article will demonstrate possibilities for automation with the help of element free simulation methods and parametric topology optimization. It will show that the final process of structural optimization is reduced to one step with the new methods. It will also demonstrate that the potential errors emerging in the process of structural optimization are eliminated.
