Abstract

In the knowledge economy one of the main tasks is to explain how locally anchored knowledge can be mobilized and “used” elsewhere. If face-to-face-interaction does not seem appropriate or is not possible, one option to mobilize knowledge is through codification. Central to the codification process is the generation of documents - rather a highly social process and an act of creation than merely the procedure of writing down (implicit) knowledge. Thus, the place of social performance including the material setting is a major factor in the codification of knowledge. This paper presents a case study on the complex, place-specific practices of knowledge codification in product development focusing on an open innovation lab, where firms seek to co-create with end users by providing prototypes or future service ideas and gathering feedback. In only short sequences of interaction the end users create new ideas and respond to the firms’ questions based on their on-site experience and without any preparation before leaving the innovation lab without the possibility of further interaction. Based on qualitative data from interviews and participant observation, findings illustrate the codification practices in these dynamic situations and outline how documents are being created. The study shows that all actors are part of the same codification practice.
