In this paper a half bridge with an external antiparallel field stop Press-Pack diode (FS PP diode) is investigated to reduce conduction losses and enhance its efficiency. A sufficient softness for hardswitching application is accomplished and the optimal irradiation dose is experimentally determined to achieve low losses in an MMC not only in inverter, but also in rectifier mode.
