Abstract

Minimizing heat losses during steel ladle transport requires effective insulation using refractory materials. Heat transfer and the impact of ladle lids on the heat balance, in combination with slags, insulating cover powders, and lid lining mixes, were modelled using Fluent, SIMU-THERM, and internally developed simulation programs. RHI is able to provide heat balance calculations of different ladle lining concepts, with or without ladle lids and cover powders, for customers. These simulations can be used to thermally track ladles in customer plants and to identify potential energy savings during the ladle cycle that can be realized using appropriate lining designs and process management. In addition, the impact of a specific lining concept on the heat balance of customers’ ladles can also be determined from these simulations. This paper provides examples illustrating the range of ladle modelling capabilities applied.
