Abstract

The Walls of Cartagena, Colombia, constitute a "contact zone" (Pratt 1991) and a symbol of segregation and exploitation at the same time. The colonial buildings of the Walled City, recognized as UNESCO World Heritage, attract thousands of tourists every year, while the less privileged, mainly Afro-descendant communities remain largely excluded from the center of this former port of transatlantic slave trade. I aim to show how dwellers of excluded neighborhoods try to cross the persistent social, spatial and racial ‘walls’ of Cartagena through projects of Afro-Colombian music and dance. I propose a “rhythmanalysis” inspired by Lefebvre (2004), relying upon data collected during ethnographic field research from January to March 2019. Outlining illustrative empirical cases, I aim to reveal how members of these communities (re-)invent territorialities and temporalities within and beyond their neighborhoods, in order to resist and (re-)exist in the face of seemingly impenetrable physical, social and symbolical walls.
