Der Einsatz moderner Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien findet heute in nahezu jedem Lebensbereich statt. Im Gesundheitswesen werden telematischen Anwendungen und der Telemedizin große Potenziale bei der Sicherstellung einer qualitativ hochwertigen, flächendeckenden und effizienten Versorgung zugesprochen. Dennoch haben diese Konzepte bisher nur in geringem Umfang Einzug in die Regelversorgung gehalten. Neben rechtlichen Aspekten und der unzureichenden Berücksichtigung in den Leistungskatalogen der Kostenträger sind fehlende klinische und insbesondere gesundheitsökonomische Evaluationsstudien die größten Barrieren, die es zu überwinden gilt.

Modern information and communication technologies are used in almost every area of life. In the health care sector, telematics applications and telemedicine are deemed to have great potentials in ensuring high quality, comprehensive and efficient patient care. However, as yet these approaches have found their way into standard health care on a small scale only. Apart from legal issues and the fact that these technologies are insufficiently represented in the catalogues of benefits of the health care funds, the biggest barriers to be overcome are missing clinical and, in particular, health economic evaluation studies.
