Abstract
INTRODUCTION
Several talent selection programs in elite sport schools are based on motor diagnostics for the purpose of recommending or transferring promising talents to general groups of sports; game sports, combat sports or endurance sports, and likewise to more concrete sports such as gymnastics, skiing, or tennis. However, the predictive value of such testing is unclear. Accordingly, this study evaluated the concurrent validity of physiological performance prerequisites, body dimensions, as well as specific motor performances.
METHODS
The sample consisted of N > 101 Elementary School children from second grade classes of the city Fulda in Germany, performing eight different sports including judo (n = 13), soccer (n = 17), sprint (n = 11) and long-distance running (n = 16), swimming (n = 9), table tennis (n = 12), tennis (n = 16), and volleyball (n = 7). The performance diagnosis in the Under-9 age group old took place between 2011 and 2014, and comprised six physical fitness (PF) and three motor competence (MC) tests. The aim of the longitudinal study was to investigate whether the investigated youngsters already at the Elementary school age showed an anthropometric, PF and MC profile which is in line with the specific requirements of eight different sports the participants performed six years later as U15 athletes. Discriminant and Neural Network (Multilayer Perceptron) analysis were used to discriminate between the athletes of the eight sports and to assign each individual of the Under-15 athletes to his own actual sport.
RESULTS
All diagnostic methods exhibited medium to high validity to discriminate between the eight different sports. The relevance of the two body dimensions, six PF, and three MC tests for talent identification was confirmed.
