Abstract
In the current pandemic, entrepreneurs are confronted with difficult situations that are emotionally exhaustive and require new ways of adaptation. We thus aim to study how entrepreneurs react and adapt to the post-corona business world, enhancing our knowledge of entrepreneurial responses to life-threatening events, which are bound to happen more frequently in the future. Drawing on semi-structured, in-depth interviews conducted with the founders of digital start-ups in China and Germany at two time points (before and after the outbreak), we find that while Chinese entrepreneurs display a more positive affective response resulting in more reactive adaptation processes (bold type and confident type), German entrepreneurs show rather negative affect and a more proactive adaptation process (fearful type). This adds to the concept of affective responses and potential positive outcomes of negative affect, while also explicating complex adaptation processes and how they vary across countries.
