In view of the increasingly scarce resources and the challenges of climate change, environmental awareness and energy efficiency are becoming increasingly important in the development of technical systems. In many applications, the friction losses that occur in contact areas are decisive for the efficiency of the entire system. Since an experimental optimization of the contact conditions, for example by coating or microtexturing, is usually very time-consuming, simulation approaches can be used to predict the tribological behaviour. The prerequisite for this is that the contact behaviour is mapped as closely as possible to the real world in the simulation with all the essential physical influencing factors. Within the scope of this work a simulation model for the transient simulation of cam-tappet contacts is presented. In order to enable a realistic description of the contact conditions, the load spectrum is based on states of different speeds, as they occur in the valve-train of combustion engines. Surface roughness of the contact partners involved are considered using stochastic contact models and by scaling the calculation area, it is possible to examine the contact conditions at the edges of the contact area. The results show that the contact conditions that occur strongly depend on the selected surface parameters and the load spectrum and that these should therefore be investigated in further work.
