Abstract
Today’s omnipresence of new information technology influences individuals’ behavior. People multitask; even during driving. Drivers often occupy themselves with non-driving-related tasks (NDRTs). Yet, distractive behavior while driving leads to inattention and increases the risk of severe traffic accidents. Fully automated driving might be a solution, yet belong to a distant future. Vehicles implementing automated driving level 3 permit their drivers to perform NDRTs within the automation zone but require them to be ready to take control of the vehicle at any time. This demonstrates that the productive use of driving time might come at the cost of increased safety risks due to insufficient and insecure take-overs. This study aims to explore the take-over performance and risk potential of performing different NDRTs while driving. Our findings contribute to the development of automated vehicles and indicate the hazard potential of visual and auditory distraction as well as multitasking and sequential-tasking.
