Abstract

This article interrogates the asylum and reception system through the gaze and interpretations articulated by some asylum seekers of Gambian natio-nality. My focus is on how they understand their experience in light of the post-asylum trajectories and networks (transnational and otherwise) they have developed within and despite the mobility regime. In the first part of the article, I focus on the description of the elements that connect the Gambian presence in Italy to the conjuncture of to the so-called “refugee crisis”. In the second section, I present and analyze the forms of knowledge that my interlocutors have developed in dealing with the humanitarian/securitarian apparatus, and the conditions of legal, housing and work preca-riousness they have faced. In the final part, I discuss how these interpretative repertoires act as tools for navigating the “cramped spaces” (Walther, Luthi 2016) of the border regime and express complex subjectivities that exceed and critically reposition themselves with respect to the roles and identities to which are assigned.

Questo articolo è volto a interrogare il sistema di asilo e accoglienza attra-verso lo sguardo e le interpretazioni articolate da alcuni richiedenti asilo di nazionalità gambiana. La mia attenzione verte su come questi comprendono la loro esperienza alla luce delle traiettorie post asilo e delle reti (transna-zionali e non) che hanno sviluppato dentro e nonostante il regime di mo-bilità. Nella prima parte dell’articolo, mi concentro sulla descrizione degli elementi che hanno reso la presenza gambiana in Italia congiunturale alla cosiddetta “crisi dei rifugiati”. Nella seconda sezione presento e analizzo le conoscenze che i miei interlocutori hanno elaborato nel confrontarsi con l’apparato umanitario/sicuritario, e le forme di precarietà legale, abitativa e lavorativa che hanno affrontato. Nella parte finale discuto come tali re-pertori interpretativi fungano da strumenti per navigare gli “spazi angusti” (Walthers, Luthi 2016) del regime dei confini e si configurino come espres-sioni di soggettività complesse che eccedono e si riposizionano criticamente rispetto ai ruoli e identità a cui vengono assegnate.
