Die Akteur-Netzwerk Theorie (ANT) eignet sich für Untersuchungen von Handlungszusammenhängen der Theater- und Tanzproduktionen, mit deutlichem Schwerpunkt auf die bislang wenig beachteten Bereiche des Sozialen, Technischen und Materiellen. In ihrem Aussagebereich ist ANT ähnlich universal wie die in der Tanz- und Theaterwissenschaft etablierte Semiotik oder Phänomenologie. Die Theorie bedient sich einer negativen Heuristik, d.h. sie ist exakt darin, zu bestimmen, was sie nicht leisten will, etwa ein Netzwerk als gebaute oder soziale Struktur aufzufassen (Latour 1996b: 378). Mit ihrem Interesse an der zirkulierenden Handlungsmacht diverser Entitäten ist die ANT geeignet, den Fokus theater- und tanzwissenschaftlicher Aufführungsanalyse von der dominanten Rezeptions- hin zur Produktionsperspektive von Aufführungen zu erweitern.

The Actor-Network Theory (ANT) is suitable for studies of agency in theater and dance productions, with a clear focus on the areas of the social, technical and material. ANT is similarly universal in its scope as the semiotics or phenomenology established in dance and theater studies in the 1970ies. The theory makes use of a negative heuristic, i.e. it is precise in determining what it does not want to achieve, such as understanding a network as a built or social structure (Latour 1996b: 378). With its interest in the circulating agency of diverse entities, ANT is suitable for expanding the focus of performance analysis in theater and dance studies from the dominant reception perspective to the production perspective of performances.
