Abstract in another language
This study addresses the growing issue of grocery access in rural areas, exacerbated by the closure of brick-and-mortar retail stores. The paper aims to understand the key success factors and potential barriers to the broader implementation of mobile retail stores. A multiple-case study was conducted which includes five mobile retail stores operators. Preliminary results indicate that profitability and customer base building are major challenges. Operations management concepts such as assortment planning, route planning, and personnel planning are crucial. These need to be addressed to solve the issue of decreasing access to groceries in rural areas by efficient mobile retailing.
