Unter dem Begriff ‚evangelikal‘ zusammengefasste protestantische Projekte erfahren global starken Zuwachs, haben im deutschsprachigen Kontext jedoch bislang wenig gesellschaftswissenschaftliche Aufmerksamkeit erfahren. Vor diesem Hintergrund möchte der Beitrag speziell zur humangeographischen Beschäftigung mit evangelikalen Projekten anregen und zugleich zur Weiterentwicklung religionsbezogener Theoriebildung beitragen. Dazu wird ein Ansatz zur Analyse religiöser ‚Territorialisierung‘ vorgeschlagen, der an Thomas Tweeds Verständnis von Religion als Praxis des dwelling und des crossing anknüpft. Empirisch wird dieser Ansatz anhand exemplarischer Beispiele aus der internationalen Forschungslandschaft und einer Fallstudie zum Stuttgarter Gospel Forum erarbeitet. Die strategische und räumliche Ausgestaltung evangelikaler Projekte, so die zentrale These, lässt sich als kontextspezifisches Zusammenspiel von nach innen und nach außen gerichteter Territorialisierung analysieren, wie es an den Motiven des ‚sicheren Hafens‘ und der ‚offensiven Mission‘ deutlich wird.

Protestant projects summarised under the term ‘evangelical’ are growing rapidly around the world, but have so far received little attention from the social sciences in the German-speaking context. Against this backdrop, this article aims to stimulate engagement with evangelical projects in the field of human geography and contribute to the development of theory in fields of study related to religion. To this end, the paper proposes an approach to the analysis of religious ‘territorialisation’ that ties in with Thomas Tweed’s understanding of religion as a practice of dwelling and crossing. Empirically, this approach is elaborated on the basis of examples from international research and a case study on the Gospel Forum in Stuttgart. The key thesis proposed is that the strategic and spatial configuration of evangelical projects can be productively analysed as a context-specific interplay of inward and outward territorialisation, as illustrated by the motifs of ‘safe haven’ and ‘offensive mission’.
