Dieser Beitrag widmet sich Massengräbern, Orten des Verschwindenlassens und anonymen Begräbnisstätten. Wurden Deathscapes bisher als Orte der Verbindung zwischen Lebenden und Toten untersucht, handelt es sich hier vielfach um nekropolitische Deathscapes, die gesellschaftliche Ausschlüsse über den Tod hinaus markieren. An die Stelle von Gedenken und Trauer treten Entwürdigung und Terror. Zur Veranschaulichung rekurriert der Beitrag neben eigener Forschung des Autors in Rio de Janeiro auch auf Arbeiten zu Genozid, Kolonialismus, Grenzregimes und staatlichem Terror. Sein Ziel ist es, Fragestellungen für die Stadtforschung herauszuarbeiten, die sich ergeben, wenn wir uns den ruhelosen Gräbern der „anderen Nekropole“ widmen.

Abstract in another language

This article is dedicated to mass graves, places of disappearance and anonymous burial sites. While deathscapes have previously been examined as places of connection between the living and the dead, these are often necropolitical deathscapes that mark social exclusions beyond death. Commemoration and mourning are being displaced by dehumanisation and terror. To illustrate this, the article draws not only on the author’s own research on violence in Rio de Janeiro, as well as on research on genocide, colonialism, border regimes and state terror. It aims to pinpoint questions for urban research that arise when we devote ourselves to the restless graves of the “other necropolis”.
