Abstract
The influence of human behavior on the security of IT systems has become an increasingly important subject for IS research as well as for management practice. To advance the understanding of the antecedent factors that influence the security behavior of IT users, we develop a conceptual model that combines research on IT usage and security behavior with research on human values. We propose that personal values have a significant impact on IT security behavior as values determine human behavior. In order to provide a model that is able to show the influence of personal values on IT security behavior we adapt the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, a widely accepted and valid framework for IT usage behavior developed by Venkatesh et al. (2003) to an IT security context. We extend the collection of influence factors proposed in this framework by modelling the user's individual value structure as a further determinant of IT security behavior.
