Abstract
Although the Catholic Church has been the hegemonic religious institution in Colombia since Spanish colonization, it has lost social control of different spheres, including private life, especially since the second half of the twentieth century. Significant cultural changes, population growth, the rise of mass media, better educational opportunities, work and legal advances for women, as well as the weakening of the pulpit and confessional as spaces of social control, led to a transformation in public conceptions of ideas around sexuality and traditional family structure in Colombia. This paper demonstrates how, despite the fierce opposition of the Church and its efforts to maintain and disseminate Catholic values, the sexual and reproductive lives of Colombian people have managed to secularize to the point of achieving full autonomy from the Church. Today, sexual and reproductive life is considered something intimate (private), and the influence of Catholicism is minimal.
