Abstract
In October 2021, LIV Golf was launched. It was positioned as a modernising and disruptive force within professional golf by providing an alternative competition to the longstanding and elite domains of the PGA and DP World (European) Tours. Financed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) and characterised by novel formats, team-based competition, and enormous signing bonuses and prize funds, LIV Golf secured the services of many of the top golfers in the world. In the ensuing years, a battle for rhetorical and sporting legitimacy has taken place between LIV Golf and the PGA and DP World Tours. It was announced in May 2026 that the PIF would cease to fund LIV Golf at the end of its 2026 season, signalling a significant development in the current power-struggle within professional golf that began with a “brute-force” entry by LIV Golf in 2021. In this rapid
communication, we seek to offer an initial critical account of LIV Golf’s apparent difficulties in maintaining a meaningful foothold in the professional golf arena. In doing so, we critically review the implications of this case for
understanding future intrusions by rival/novel leagues into established domains of professional sport.
