Abstract

This research project aims to further develop the independent and specialised simulation tool Z88ENSI. This tool is intended to make the thermal behaviour of Dual-Purpose Storage and Transport Casks (DPCs) more user-friendly and computationally more cost-effective for safety-related assessment purposes.
As part of this project, we have already implemented height-specific burn-up of spent fuel rod assemblies (SFA). Recently, we have extended the graphical user interface (GUI) of Z88ENSI with the ability to vary the material parameters of any component or region of a DPC. This allows the thermal behaviour of different materials to be quickly and easily evaluated without the need to add new geometry. Furthermore, it is now possible to quickly analyse the calculation results through an automatically generated calculation report directly accessible through the GUI.
The final part of this research project is the development and implementation of substitute models for SFA instead of using the heat flow boundary conditions at the walls of the fuel rod basket as a heat source. The substitute models will be based on a model using the effective thermal conductivity for a homogenised solid. This allows an accurate prediction of the peak temperature of the fuel rod cladding.
