Bei der United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) 1992 in Rio standen die Themen "Biodiversität" und "Nachhaltigkeit" im Mittelpunkt. Der Erhalt von Biodiversität und der natürlichen Lebensgrundlagen wurde in direkten Zusammenhang mit dem Leitbild einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung gebracht und zu vorrangigen Zielen in einer sich entwickelnden Welt erklärt. Neben der Verabschiedung der Biodiversitätskonvention wurde mit der "Agenda 21" die überstaatliche Bedeutung der Nachhaltigkeit in verschiedenen Bereichen der menschlichen Gesellschaft herausgestellt.
