Abstract
The German Olympic Sports Confederation has developed a competence model in which everyday coaching situations form the starting point for coach education (Möhrle et al., 2023). Subsequently, the authors identified 46 such situations (e.g. Coach and athlete work on the preparation phase of the target movement. The athlete is contributing his opinion.). In order to be able to cope with them, coaches should acquire the relevant knowledge during coach education. However, there is a paucity of empirical studies on which knowledge coaches need for their everyday work (Heim et al., 2018). To address this research gap, we conducted expert interviews with n = 14 sport scientists from seven disciplines to answer the following research question: What knowledge is relevant for coaches to cope with everyday coaching situations? The experts were asked about Möhrle et al.’s (2023) 15 multisport situations, and the data were analysed using content analysis. It appears that knowledge of sports didactics (e.g. teaching techniques), sports psychology (e.g. motivational strategies), training and exercise science (e.g. development of a training plan) is required much more often to cope with the everyday coaching situations than knowledge of sports medicine (e.g. medical parameters and test procedures), sports pedagogy (e.g. development of capable athletes) and sports sociology (e.g. training environment). This is probably due to the high proportion of coaching situations in the area of training (7/15). In summary, the study provides a comprehensive overview of relevant knowledge for coaches that should be addressed in coach education.
