Understanding the electrochemical system consisting of platinum and yttria-stabilized zirconia oxide (YSZ) is important for the development of oxygen sensors and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). In order to investigate the O2/Pt/YSZ-system in detail, model electrodes with defined geometry have been fabricated by screen-printing platinum with a small amount of aluminum oxide on YSZ-substrate. Although the model electrodes are visually dense, having only some closed pores, we have observed phenomena indicating oxygen transport through the electrode bulk, most likely along grain boundaries. A model that includes two transport paths, surface diffusion and grain boundary diffusion, is proposed.
