Emergence of soot is a problem in nowadays diesel combustion engines. Diesel particulate filters (DPF) are a suitable method to reduce the amount of particulate matter in the exhaust, but it is necessary to monitor the correct function of this system. This work describes a possibility to detect soot in the automotive exhaust. The soot electrically connects micro structured electrodes. The signal change (decreasing resistance) could be used to detect either the loading (upstream) or the damage (downstream) of a DPF.
