Abstract
Zeolites are cation conductors with a high inner porosity and huge inner surfaces. Up to now, they have been applied in gas sensors as filters, as catalysts, or as preconcentrators. Recently, zeolites are proposed as functional materials in impedimetric ammonia, hydrocarbon, or water sensors. Only one approach is known, where zeolites serve as an ion conducting phase for potentiometric gas sensors. In this potentiometric hydrocarbon sensor, zeolite discs on Au electrodes are connected with a Pt/Na0.85CoO2 reference electrode. The response time is in the range of several minutes. For real world applications, a planar sensor setup is preferred, since manufacturing is less expensive and the sensor response times are expected to be lower due to fast gas diffusion through the zeolite materials.
Here, a planar sensor setup is investigated. It consists of thin-film Au interdigital electrodes (line = space = 15 μm) on alumina substrates. One electrode comprises an additional very thin metal or metal oxide cover (Cr2O3, TiO2, Pt). Ion conducting, screen-printed Pt-doped ZSM-5 zeolites with varying cations (Na+, H+, NH4+) covers the electrodes. The sensors are heated to 300 - 550°C. Depending on the zeolite, on the thin metal or metal oxide electrode cover, and on the operation temperature, a specific response to different gases can be obtained.
