Abstract
In contrast to typical gas sensors, resistive NOx gas dosimeters measure continuously the amount (or the dose) of NOx in the test gas. Its complex impedance decreases linearly with the integrated NOx concentration in the test gas. During NOx absence, the sensor signal remains constant. To study the sensing mechanism in detail, especially the adsorption processes on the NOx storage layer of the NOx dosimeter, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) is an appropriate tool. DRIFTS on powdered catalysts and in-situ DRIFTS on the NOx dosimeter itself during sensor operation show the formation of nitrites and nitrates during exposure with NOx. The complex impedance response and the nitrate formation during NOx exposure agree very well.
