Abstract
Southern Africa is characterised by a political, economic and social heterogeneity that makes it difficult for regional trans-boundary initiatives to foster integration. However, current challenges do not stop at state borders: the HIV/AIDS pandemic, rapid environmental degradation and political crises call for immediate solutions and can only be tackled through regional co-operation. The article examines perspectives of such cross-border efforts and highlights potentials and draw-backs of environmental and social changes. Finally, we argue that, from a geographical viewpoint, trans-boundary co-operation and a regional approach make sense, despite the political and economic dominance of South Africa and extreme disparities in the region.
