Abstract

Social media has become an integral part of adolescents’ everyday lives and food occupies a prominent position on these platforms. Different actors often construct diverging ideas about what an appropriate diet should look like, how it can be made more health-promoting or sustainable. For adolescents social media usage has become a vital part of coping with developmental tasks. They take on a central role as a social context and as a platform for secondary food socialisation agents that help to shape food-related attitudes, values, and behaviours. This chapter outlines different practices of food-related social media use by adolescents in relation to their developmental tasks. It emphasises distinct elements of food, health, and media literacy as critical in engaging with the content presented and generated on social media platforms and derives recommendations for future research and practice to ensure healthy and sustainable nutritional careers.
